Join SAE

SAE will host a company speaker on the first Monday of each month. Information about which company, where, and what time the meetings will be is usually updated on the Instagram. You must be a paying member of SAE to attend these meetings. We recommend that all students in SAE come to these meetings as it is great to hear from a variety of companies and get a look at possible opportunities after A&M. Some of the time these companies are looking to hire interns only from our SAE program, so it is also a great networking opportunity. Joining a Design Team

TAMU’s SAE chapter is comprised of four design teams. For more info about each team navigate to their respective tabs on the website. Application announcements will always be announced on the Website and Instagram.

Formula IC

Applications are available at the end of every school year.

Sub-teams: Chassis, Aerodynamics, Suspension, and Powertrain

Year: U4

Major: MEEN

Other Requirements: Resume

If chosen for an interview, you will get an email about the details of the interview. Formula IC are 8x national champions at A&M. We looks for students who are passionate and want to win. If you do not have automotive experience, you should still apply as that is not a prerequisite for joining the team. This team is a senior capstone and is considered a class at Texas A&M.

Solar

Applications will open the last month of spring semester and the first month of the fall semester.

Sub-teams: Aeroshell, Chassis, Manufacturing, Steering/Brakes, Suspension/Wheels, Battery, Power Distribution, Telemetry, and Array

Year: All

Major: All

Other Requirements: Resume

If chosen for an interview, you will get an email about the details of the interview. Solar Car is the only A&M SAE team to build a road-legal vehicle and race it. Solar Car utilizes a photovoltaic array that charges a lithium-ion battery pack to power the car.

Baja

Applications are available at the end of every school year.

Sub-teams: Chassis, Electrical, Suspension, and Powertrain

Year: All

Major: All

Other Requirements: Resume

If chosen for an interview, you will get an email about the details of the interview. Baja creates an off-roading vehicle and competes against other universities at competition every year.

Formula E

Applications are available at the end of every school year.

Sub-teams: High Voltage, Chassis, Aerodynamics, Suspension, and Electronics

Year: All

Major: All

Other Requirements: Resume

If chosen for an interview, you will get an email about the details of the interview. Formula E utilizes a battery to power the car rather than an Internal Combustion Engine.

Extra Fun Stuff

Joining the Business Side

Interested in working on the business side of things rather than working on the technical side? Than being on a business team may be perfect for you! Each design team has a business sub-team that deals with logistics and sponsors every year. To join a business team, simply apply during the normal application cycle for your desired team and you will specify business as your preferred sub-team. This is not only a great opportunity for engineering students, but also specifically students in Industrial Distribution and Mays.

Becoming a Driver

To tryout and become a driver for one of the teams you must be a student at Texas A&M. Driver tryouts are usually held in the middle of the fall semester. Information about tryouts each year will be posted closer to the date. Generally, the teams are looking for people with racing/driving experience who can work well with the engineering team. Being selected as a Driver for one of the teams means that you will become a driver, team member, and representative for an internationally ranked, recognized, and respected program. As a driver, you will be expected to make yourself available for testing and development throughout the school year, during holidays and until competition.

Join our Club Programs

Become an Apprentice

The SAE Apprentices program is for select undergraduate students to shadow and interact with the Formula IC, Formula E, Baja, and Aero design teams. Once students are accepted into the program, they will have access to team meetings, manufacturing, and testing. Applications for apprenticeships will open during the first few weeks of the fall semester. You will fill out an application and choose your top two teams as well as your sub-team of choice. If chosen for an interview, you will get an email about the details of the interview. Apprenticeships for most design teams are currently open to all majors and classifications. However, Formula IC only accepts junior MEEN students.

Join Development

Development is a program open to all students to give an introduction to race car engineering principles. Development is usually comprised of freshman and sophomores and is a great stepping stone to later join a design team. For more information about Development navigate to the Development tab. Joining Development is easy and there is no application necessary. All you have to do is show up to the meetings and be willing to learn.
