2020 Texas A&M Formula Team

Formula SAE (FSAE) is a part of SAE International’s Collegiate Design Series, which enables students to design, build, and test the performance of a Formula style race car and then compete with other students from around the globe. The open-ended style of the competition allows students to demonstrate and prove their creativity and engineering skills, and communicate their knowledge to both industry professionals and teams from other universities.
The FSAE program at Texas A&M has a very storied past, having placed 1st overall in competition seven times since its inception in 1999. The program is inherently unique, primarily because only undergraduates with senior classification participate each year. This aspect of the program implores students to seek their own engineering solutions each year, as opposed to mimicking a previous year’s winning design.
The team prides itself on being engineering design oriented. Each student on the team is in charge of a particular subset of the car, and is responsible for researching, designing, manufacturing, and testing that subset. By following the engineering design process, students not only gain an in depth understanding of their subset of the car, they also learn aspects of the design process which can be applied to other design challenges in their future careers. While other FSAE programs produce race cars, at Texas A&M we produce engineers that can produce race cars.
After a Spring application process, approximately 20 senior engineering students are selected at the beginning of each Fall semester. The program is a part of the Senior Capstone Design course, enabling students to learn the principles of design, project management, business, and engineering in an application based learning process. The team researches solution methods and designs the car in the Fall, and manufactures and tests the car in the Spring leading up to competition in the Summer.
